Ferrybridge - Post WWII
Following the end of WWII most of the military installations at Ferrybridge were abandoned and over a period of a few years related structures cleared away. Today there are just a few pillboxes and traces in the outlines of the vegetated areas.
The Whiteheads site continued to make torpedoes up until 1966 but then switched to manufacturing hydraulic components before finally closing in 1997. More details can be found here.
However, there was still some military-related activity in the area. The RE Bridging Camp at the Narrows continued to grow and evolve to meet the various training needs.
A new activity was a series of anchor tests for the navy carried out on the sand flats in front of the Visitors Centre. More details on this can be found here.
The W J Tod industrial site moved from making pleasure boats to sonar domes for the navy. This business expanded and they needed to move to a larger site so this site closed in 2001. More details on this can be found here.
