Chesil Beach and the Fleet Lagoon
18 miles and 180 billion pebbles
Ferrybridge - Leisure use
The Ferrybridge area is a favourite for leisure activities. These include:
- Beach walking and sight-seeing
- Dog walking
- Bird watching
- Swimming
- Wind surfing
- Angling
- Diving
- Static caravans
There are many published guides both on the Internet and in hard copy form covering these activities. Note that some of these activities have seasonal limitations to protect nesting birds.
Some leisure activities are actively discouraged because of their potentially dangerous conflict with other users of the area. These include:
- Off-road cycling
- Quad bike riding
- Horse riding
- Drone flying
- Sailing in the Fleet
- Pebble collecting
- Camping
Please note that the waters off Hamm Beach are part of Portland Harbour and a permit is required to use any form of watercraft. Permits can be bought online or in local watersport shops. The Portland Port website has full details. Also note that during the summer months an area off Hamm Beach marked by buoys is reserved for swimmers only.
Within the Fleet the waters are owned by the Ilchester Estates and are part of the Chesil Bank and the Fleet Nature Reserve. See their website for current information on permitted use.
The land area south and west of the Fleet is owned by the Crown Estate. See their notice boards for permitted use of their area, particularly Hamm Beach.
If you are visiting the area for the first time you are encouraged to visit the Wild Chesil Visitors Centre in the car park where there are a range of leaflets available. Rangers and volunteers can also offer useful advice on a range of activities
