The Port Isolation Hospital was located on the slope above the Fleet in what is now a caravan park. The hospital was run by the Port Sanitary Authority joint board.

Port Sanitary Authorities were set up under 1872 Health Act. The Weymouth Board was set up in 1877 and was permanently constituted by the Weymouth Port Order, 1897. The area of jurisdiction of the Authority was from Abbotsbury to St Alban’s Head. The Authority had 14 members drawn from across the area of jurisdiction.

The hospital was erected in 1880 at a cost of £6,000 and had four wards. Its purpose was to quarantine people arriving by sea with infectious diseases. The hospital was closed in 1937 and the buildings sold off.

Today the two main buildings of the hospital have been converted into holiday accommodation within a caravan camp.

The same area in 2022. The two hospital buildings can be seen in the middle of the picture. Almost everything else around them has changed.
